How to Make Your Home Smell Good

Learn how to make your home smell good this holiday season with a delicious mix of citrus, cinnamon, and spices. When the cookies have been baked and Christmas dinner hasn’t made it to the oven yet, put this mixture on the stove and let it simmer. The sweetness and spiciness will blend perfectly with the Christmas tree. Keep reading for more directions on how to make your home smell good without much effort at all!

Cinnamon sticks tied with twine, star anise, peppercorns, and citrus slices on a wooden surface engraved with "Ginny's."
  1. Fill a dutch oven about half way with water.
(We used the Rachael Ray Hard-Anodized Nonstick Cookware Set in orange).
  2. Slice one lemon and one orange, and then add the slices to the pot of water.
  3. Drop a few cinnamon sticks, cloves, and star anise into the water with the lemon and orange. Star anise smells a little like black licorice, so use it in moderation.
  4. Simmer on the stove for hours, checking periodically to ensure you don’t run out of water or have too much water and risk boiling over. Don’t forget to turn off the stove before leaving home.
Cinnamon sticks, star anise, peppercorns, and slices of lemons and oranges simmering in a pot of water.

As the pot simmers, the water will pick up the scent of all the ingredients and become more fragrant. Also, the steam from the simmering water will help humidify your home and add some moisture to the dry winter air..

Feel free to adjust how much of each ingredient you are using or substitute out different spices. Apples might also be a great addition or substitution! Making your home smell good has never been easier or more fun.
