Summerween Fun: How to Carve Watermelons for the Perfect Spooky-Sweet Activity

Summer party with people gathered to carve watermelons

Who says jack-o’-lantern carving is only for fall?

Welcome to Summerween — the delightfully quirky celebration that brings spooky fun to sunny days. Whether you’re hosting a backyard bash, planning a unique family activity, or just looking for an excuse to get creative with your kids, carving watermelons is the perfect blend of festive and refreshing.

It’s easier (and less messy) than carving pumpkins, and when you’re done, you’ve got a built-in snack to enjoy! Think of it as Halloween’s cool, fruity cousin.

Make It a Party!

Here are some fun ways to turn watermelon carving into a full-blown Summerween event:

  • Themed costumes: Think spooky-meets-summer—like skeleton swimsuits or witchy sunglasses.
  • Watermelon carving contest: Give prizes for “Silliest Smile,” “Scariest Face,” or “Best Teamwork.”
  • DIY fruit bars: Serve the carved-out melon with yogurt, granola, and fun toppings.
  • Craft station: Let kids decorate mini melons with stickers, paint, or markers if they’re too young to carve.

What You’ll Need

Before you dive in, gather your materials:

  • 1 large, watermelon (the bigger, the better!)
  • Sharp kitchen knife
  • Spoon or melon baller
  • Dry-erase marker or washable pen
  • Paring knife (for details)
  • A bowl for the scooped-out melon
  • Optional: battery-powered tea lights or glow sticks for spooky effect

Step-by-Step Guide to Carving a Watermelon Jack-O’-Lantern

A carved watermelon with a jack-o'-lantern face, glowing from within, surrounded by watermelon slices and festive decor.

Step 1: Pick Your Perfect Melon

Choose a watermelon with a flat side (it helps it stay stable) and smooth skin. Oval shapes mimic the look of a classic jack-o’-lantern, but round ones work too!

Step 2: Slice Off the Bottom

Cut a small, flat piece from the bottom to create a stable base. Be careful not to cut into the flesh too much—you want the watermelon to stand upright.

Step 3: Cut an Opening

Like a pumpkin, you can cut a lid from the top to scoop out the inside. Or, if you prefer, cut from the back side so your design stays clean in the front.

Step 4: Scoop It Out

Use a spoon or melon baller to remove the red watermelon meat. Save it for snacking, smoothies, or a fruit salad!

Step 5: Draw Your Face

Use a dry-erase marker to sketch your jack-o’-melon face. Go classic with triangle eyes and a toothy grin, or try spooky, silly, or even emoji-style expressions. Kids love designing their own!

Step 6: Carve It

Use a sharp knife (adults only!) to carefully carve along your outlines. A paring knife helps with fine details. For younger kids, you can even skip the carving and use cookie cutters to make shapes in the rind!

Step 7: Display it

Add a battery-powered tea light or glow stick inside for a glowing Summerween effect when the sun starts to set. Or fill the carved melon with fruit salad for a functional centerpiece!

Additional Tips & Tricks

  • Chill the watermelon beforehand—it’s easier to handle and extra refreshing.
  • Line your table with butcher paper or a disposable tablecloth for easy cleanup.
  • Have a few stencils on hand if anyone wants guidance with their designs.

A Sweet & Spooky Summer Tradition

Summerween is all about embracing joy, imagination, and a little silliness. Carving watermelons is a low-stress, high-reward activity that brings people together—plus, you get a healthy treat out of it!

So gather your crew, grab a melon, and let the carving (and snacking) begin!
