How to Clean Outdoor Patio Cushions

When it comes to how to clean outdoor patio cushions, it can be difficult to know where to start. After all, you can’t just toss a patio cushion in the washing machine! But outdoor patio cushions tend to pick up a lot of stains and dirt, and can also get a little dingy while sitting in winter storage. Brighten up your cushions and spot clean like a champ with a few simple steps. Learning how to clean outdoor patio cushions will be a breeze!

Cleaning Outdoor Cushions

Before You Start: Do a little research on your cushions! Check the tags for cleaning instructions in case there are any special specifications. If your cushion cover can come off with a zipper, you may be able to just put it in the washing machine.

Step One: Make sure to take a bristle cleaning brush or a broom and sweep any debris off of the cushions.

Step Two: Mix together a solution of one part dish detergent with three parts warm water. Put it in a spray bottle and then spritz it all over the outdoor patio cushion. Let the solution sit on the cushions for about twenty minutes.

Step Three: Get out the hose! Make sure you’ve got a high pressure nozzle on and spray down the cushion.

Step Four: It’s time to spot clean your cushions. Got tough stains? Sprinkle baking soda all over the stain and scrub it into the cushion; using a brush would be best, but a rag can work well too. Finally, rinse the cushion down with a hose again, and then leave it in the sun to dry!

Maintaining Your Outdoor Cushions

To prevent yourself from having to deep-clean outdoor cushions too often, maintain them regularly with a simple daily routine. Brush the cushions daily with a broom to keep debris from settling. If it rains, help the cushions dry quickly by leaning them on their sides. Don’t let spills set; soak them up with a paper towel before they have time to dry out. And finally, keep your dishwasher detergent and warm water mixture on hand to quickly combat trouble spots when they appear to avoid a long deep clean later.
